Green Tea, with a sweet Thai twist

iced green tea, weekend market

iced green tea, weekend market

Location: Weekend Market, Bangkok, Thailand. At a wee food and drink stall

Date/Time: 5th December 2009

Variety of Tea: Iced Green Tea. It’s Matcha Green Tea (Japanese and very healthy). Then it’s mixed with a table spoon of sugar, two of evaporated milk, one of condensed milk and lots of ice.

Cost: 30 Baht (about 55p)

Service: Fast as a fast person making tea quickly.

Taste: A lot like a milk shake. Pretty sweet. Tastier than plain Matcha Green Tea but that may be due to the sweetness

Ambiance: Sunny day, great market, full of locals. Adam had just bought a sweet Bruce Lee t-shirt so the tea was the icing on the cake!

Shadam rating: 8/10. Really healthy but not really healthy all at the same time. One of life’s lovely little dilemmas

Thai Tea – Try it… once

Thai Milky Tea with Tamarind, really it is

Thai Milky Tea with Tamarind, really it is

Location: Weekend Market, Bangkok, Thailand. At a wee food and drink stall

Date/Time: 5th December 2009

Variety of Tea: Thai Tea. It’s milky tea mixed with ground Tamarind seed which makes it go a weird orange colour. And of course it has a layer of condensed milk!

Cost: 20 Baht (about 40p)

Service: Fast, efficient, not so friendly but it was a busy market so that’s fair enough

Taste: Strange, sweet, odd, savory, interesting, different, unique

Ambiance: Sunny day, great market, full of locals. Pretty good

Shadam rating: 2/10. You have to try the local brew but we won’t be having a second cup!

*This Tea review is dedicated to our friend Craig Dunn, who we still love even though, while in Thailand, he committed the unforgivable sin of forgetting about a cup of tea and not drinking it.

Coffee review… for a wee change

Coffee in Vietnam

Coffee in Vietnam

Location: On Ly Tu Trong, near Ben Thanh Market, Ho Chi Minh City

Date/Time: 30th October, about 5.45am as we just got off the sleeper train.

Variety of Tea: Vietnamese drip coffee (Okay I know we’re on a tea journey but Vietnam is ALL about the coffee)

Cost: 10,000 Dong (about 35p) including a pot of iced Vietnamese tea for Adam

Service: Friendly albeit mostly in sign language. I also got my sandals repaired AND cleaned with toothbrush for a dollar!

Taste: Strong and rich, good for keeping me awake until hotel check in at 12pm! If you look closely you can see the layer of condensed milk at the bottom making it oh so sweet.

Ambiance: Outside in the early morning sun with locals whizzing past on their scooters going to work. Great spot for people watching.

Shadam rating: 7/10. We could quite happily sit and watch the world go by for ages but the wee plastic chairs got a bit sore after a while.

Free Tea in Japan

dsc 0214

Location: Lake Toya, Japan. At our WWOOF host’s festival-party-cultural-event-thing

Date/Time: 11th July 2009 (ages ago, I know!)

Variety of Tea: Wild Tea. Made from a local wild herb. It’s an ancient remedy to everything, but then a cup of Tea always makes you feel better doesn’t it!

Cost: Free, if you know where to look.

Service: Made over an open fire by the Chief of the local Ainu tribe. He was the kind of guy who looks like he knows the all the secrets of the world.

Taste: Subtle herb taste and a hint of smoke from the fire. Like nothing else but right tasty.

Ambiance: Beautiful sunny day, calm lake on one side and mountains on the other. Very nice indeed.

Shadam rating: 8/10. A once in a lifetime cup of tea. A tasty brew in a beautiful setting, made by the chief of an ancient tribe. Sometimes, the best things really are free.

Tea (sort of) next to Lake Toya, Japan

Tea vending machine, Lake Toya, Japan

Tea vending machine, Lake Toya, Japan

Location: Hot Spring bath next to Campsite on Lake Toya, Hokkaido, Japan.

Date/Time: 8th July 2009, about 6pm

Variety of Tea: The free vending machine kind… I’ll be honest, we actually had a beer but I really loved the tea vending machine so I wanted to use the picture.

Cost: The Tea was free! Hot spring bath was 390Yen (about £2.50) which was a bargain after a rainy day camping, the beer was 180Yen (about £1.20).

Service: self service so I’d say it was excellent!

Taste: OK, this isn’t really a tea review but after a roasting hot bath, the cold beer was cracking.

Ambiance: We were sitting on the floor with lots of old Japanese people sharing polite nods and the like… feeling quite pleased with ourselves after a hot bath. So yeah, pretty good.

Shadam rating: 9/10 for the hot bath, 8/10 for the Tea machine, 6/10 for the beer, 0/10 for the tea review (sorry!)

Tea in Sapporo, Japan

Tea in Sapporo

Tea in Sapporo

Location: Sapporo, Japan

Date/Time: 15th June 2009

Variety of Tea: Green Tea milk shake (cold). Might have had ice-cream in it

Cost: 450 Yen (~£3)

Service: Just the usual friendly and helpful Japanese service we’re getting used to.

Taste: Maybe just about the nicest drink I’ve had on the trip so far. Tasty, smooth, creamy… a little bit special.

Ambiance: Just a wee café but it had just started raining so it looked pretty good at the time

Shadam rating: A strong 8/10. Might be stretching the definition of Tea a bit, but is was a smashing drink.

Tea, waiting 6 hours for a train in Latvia

Tea in Dugavpils

Tea in Dugavpils

Location: Daugavpils, Latvia. In a random cafe

Date/Time: 8th May 2009, Lunch time

Variety of Tea: Black, loose leaf. Looked nice in the jar

Cost: 3 Lats (About £4) for 2

Service: Only one member of staff spoke English, so she got all her colleagues out to listen to me order. Amusing but a little odd

Taste: Cracking cuppa, even got milk which is a rare thing on this trip!

Ambiance: Shopping centre chic, not great. And they stopped us playing cards because it’s illegal in Latvia to play cards in public – strange but true

Shadam rating: 5/10

Date/Time: 6th May 2009, approx 12:30

Variety of Tea: Earl Grey

Service: The man wore cufflinks, nuff said

Taste: Pretty good, it came in one of those massive cups. Not sure why that’s worth mentioning, but it is

Ambiance: We were outside, it started raining, we were under an umbrella thing. Cue the old “we’re not getting wet” warm glow inside

Shadam rating: 4/10 – Bit pricy for the area but altogether not bad
